A three-time premiership ruckman, Clark Keating has been dubbed the ‘September specialist’ for his heroic roles during Brisbane’s finals campaigns.
Originally recruited from Surfers Paradise by the Lions, as a 16-year-old local project, Clark quickly developed into a valuable big man. Steady progress from 1996 to 1999 ensured he played 62 games kicking 43 goals, predominately in the shadow of Brisbane ruckman Matthew Clarke.
Knee tendonitis led to 2000 being a complete write-off, and appeared to halt Clark’s rise as Brisbane’s number one ruck prospect. In contrast, his stature grew in the following seasons as he played a pivotal role in the Lions’ triple premierships during 2001-03.
Despite missing extended periods during 2002, 2003 and 2004, Clark was always highly regarded by Leigh Matthews and his automatic selection ensured he played in four successive grand finals – a testament to his importance in one of the greatest sides ever seen on a football field.
