IS THE COLLEGE DREAM POSSIBLE?
Playing highly competitive sport full time whilst earning a tertiary degree in your chosen field… is that possible? Yes it is… not only that but a US college may assist you offset the cost of your university tuition fees and living expenses with a sport scholarship or financial assistance based on your athletic and academic achievements. Alternatively, we can guide and mentor you and your family into fee based study in a cost effective manner navigating the highly complex and commercial maze of tertiary education in the USA.
The opportunity to pursue this unique pathway is open to any high school student from Year 9 through to Year 12 and especially for individuals with strong achievement in a particular sport.
HOW IS USA COLLEGE SPORT ORGANISED?
College sport has become an integral part of over 1200 colleges across the USA.
Most sport teams at each university have a full time coach, at least one assistant coach, and a financial budget to cover:
- touring/travel costs (flights, rental vans, hotels, etc),
- equipment and clothing costs (track suits, shirts, shoes, etc), and most importantly,
- scholarships for selected team members consisting of:
- university tuition fees,
- living expenses (room and board),
- an allowance for books,
- on-campus insurance and other costs.
Each team has an organised daily practice schedule, a specific weekly strength and fitness program, and a full intercollegiate competition schedule including conference, regional, and national championships. Each year there are more and more Australian student-athletes interested in pursuing college sport and education in the US. It is important that prospective college students are informed about what is required to be recruited by a US college. If you are seeking a sport scholarship, be aware that they are not easy to obtain and academic achievements are as of equal importance to sport achievements in the recruiting process and throughout your college degree program.
THE UPSIDE TO THE WHOLE COLLEGE EXPERIENCE
The college system allows for daily practice and strong competitive opportunities for those who make teams. The depth of competition provided by intercollegiate meets, tournaments, or games means that your performance is constantly tested in the toughest amateur sporting environment in the world. Also, as a member of a college team, all of your sport expenses during college will be paid for. This can add up to tens of thousands of dollars, regardless of what type of college program you finally choose.
The other significant benefit of pursuing the college pathway is you are encouraged to complete a bachelor’s degree in a field of your choosing. This enables you to pursue an alternative career to your sporting passion as a fallback for the inevitable transition for all athletes back into the mainstream community and workforce.
By linking your sport and education goals you will meet this inevitable transition with a plan and most importantly the ability to make a choice rather than the uncertainty faced by many when the sports competition pathway is no longer an option.
BE INFORMED...
The TWO most commonly made mistake by Australian athletes interested in college sport scholarships....
IT IS NEVER TOO EARLY
Waiting too long to learn how the college process works and then not taking timely action can result in a likely scholarship recipient missing out entirely.
For example, most students usually wait until they are in Year 12 before seriously thinking about going to college in the USA or begin to search for a scholarship opportunity. This can be a costly mistake. What is unknown to many people is that by the middle of Year 12 a large number of scholarship opportunities have already been informally offered to someone who started the recruiting process much earlier. This means that, even for the best players, the number of scholarships available at their appropriate level is significantly reduced. If a good ‘student-athlete’ expects to have a chance to play at the college level on scholarship he or she needs to prepare, academically, athletically, and personally, for this opportunity as early as Year 9 or 10.
MANY LEVELS OF COMPETITION
Another common mistake made by aspiring prospects is assuming you have to be a super star athlete to be considered for a college scholarship.
This is not true.
The US College System has several different levels of competition that feature athletes from junior national teams to outstanding high school competition. Also your academic grades are a HUGE factor in the recruiting process. Many coaches will look first at a student’s academic report cards before perusing their athletic resume. What this means is that if you are an outstanding student and an above average athlete, you will be recruited as heavily as an outstanding athlete with average grades. Not only that but you may be eligible for an academic scholarship as well as an athletic scholarship. Remember, you will be considered a ‘student-athlete’ in the US college system.
