Alwyn is a talented forward/midfielder who booted 39 goals for South Adelaide in 2006 and finished equal fifth in the club's Best & Fairest. He was also named most improved player for South Adelaide.

Alwyn’s great performance for South Adelaide in 2006 turned many heads, especially those of the Essendon recruiting team, who saw something special and snapped him up in the third round of the National Draft. Alwyn made his debut in the opening round of the 2007 season and played every game up until round 14, when he broke his arm.

Davey is lightning quick, has great awareness around goals and has the ability to conjure something out of nothing, which showed with 5 Goal of the Year nominations in his first 5 games. Alwyn won the AFL Army Award in 2007 and also provided many highlights throughout the season, mainly with his freakish goal kicking abilities.

Alwyn’s 2008 season was cut short by a knee injury after some good early season form. After a solid pre-season, Alwyn made his comeback in Essendon’s second NAB Cup match during the 2009 NAB Cup. Continuing his good form, Alwyn played 20 games during the 2009 season and kicked 14 goals and was one of Essendon's best defensive forwards, laying 87 tackles for the year.
